TAFCA Handicap KO Quarter Final

We continued the defence of our title with a tough looking tie against St Andrews B. A dangerous assignment, given that these guys are much better than their grading estimates, and we were giving away a fair time handicap on all boards. Alan had 17 minutes against his opponent’s 43, Alastair and Ross 15 v 45, myself 23 v 37.

A tricky situation, since as the higher rated team, we needed to win to go through – St Andrews would win on tie-break if 4-4. Good recovery by Ross from a worse situation. I lost on time after also recovering to be ahead in material. Didn’t see the other two boards as you normally would in a match. No time to spectate! We needed at least 2½ points from the reverse games.

Down to the wire, as Alan was very disappointed to throw away an overwhelming position. But Alastair again won handily and I converted my rematch comfortably enough. All down to Ross who was coolness personified as he calmly brought the win home.

So through to the semis where Perth A await in the Fair City. Tougher team, less of a time handicap. We go again, as they say.
